I Hit The Shorebird Mother Lode Yesterday

If your interested in large shore birds, this should be an interesting post.Yesterday I took a drive a few miles east of the town of Teacapan .The road ends at the estuary which swings south of town then back north.

Just before reaching the the estuary,i spotted this just off the road.

003

I counted close to 100 large birds in and out of this shot.Below standing together are Wood Storks and Roseate Spoonbills.

004

White Pelicans and Wood storks.

005

I was like a kid in a candy store.Note the reflection of the pink of the Spoonbills off the water.

012

The Stork and Egret are deciding, who gets the next fish.

014

Just to break the monotony. Here’s a shot of the big estuary a few miles up the road. You can see George Washington in the background centre.

017

I spent a few minutes at the estuary then headed back to my little bird bonanza.Stork,Spoonbill and Heron all in one shot.Nice posing guys, thanks.

021

Thank goodness for my new Canon SX10,with the X20 zoom.If I had had my old camera, all the shots would have looked like the first one.

022

Here’s a Great Blue Heron and a Great Egret together.I needed the stabilization feature of the camera for these shots for sure as my hands were shaking with excitement.

024

SO! DO YOU WANT TO DANCE?

025

Just down the road a hundred yards was another area with a slightly different group of birds.

043

I found these Black-Bellied Whistling-Ducks,native to this latitude.

042

And an Ibis below. The ducks in the water,I’m not sure of what they are.

if I'm wrong about any of my identifications, please feel free to jump in with a comment.I made the pictures a little larger for this blog post for “clicking on” if you wish.

034-1

Finally, I think this Cormorant wants to get a sing song started. All together now.

037 It was quite a day.

  2. Great photos WW & I know the feeling when you come across something exciting like that. Your blog is now much easier to read since you changed the background color too. That's a big help for older eyes.....:))

  3. Those photos are great. I am glad you have that zoom lens too so we can see those birds. Be careful being this close to that Stork, he might leave a little bundle!!!!

  5. OK Bill, now I am getting jealous! What fantastic bird photos! I know what you mean about getting so excited that your hands are shaking when you come across something like that. It happens to me too - have to take some deep breaths and calm myself down. I think those ducks in the water might be Blue-wing Teal but hard to tell for sure.
